The majority of provinces in Indonesia already have regional Sharia Economic and Financial Committees

As many as 30 of the total 38 provinces in Indonesia now have Sharia Economic and Financial Regional Committees.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS — Vice President Ma'ruf Amin reiterated that Sharia economics was built to empower and encourage people to get involved in developing the economy. So far, Muslims tend to be left behind in the economic sector, one of which is because they misunderstand religious teachings. Some Muslims consider world affairs to be unimportant compared to the affairs of the afterlife.

"However, we want to build the hereafter by building the world as well," said Vice President Amin in his speech when attending the Idul Fitri 1445 Hijriah Gathering of the Sharia Economic and Financial Committee (KDEKS) in Banten Province at Annawawi Tanara Islamic Boarding School, Serang, Banten, on Saturday (4/5/2024).

The Vice President then encouraged a "jihad" in building the nation's economy. The Islamic community must be a force that can contribute to national development. "Don't just be bystanders, but make a significant contribution. If in the past people fought "jihad" against colonizers, or waged a "jihad" against enemies in war, now the "jihad" is in the economic realm, building the economy, building the nation and the people," he said.

Economic development must also adhere to Sharia principles or follow the guidance of Allah. The process of building a Sharia economy in Indonesia has begun with the development of the financial sector, especially in the field of financing. The interest-based system in the financing sector is balanced with a Sharia financial system.

In the past, people fought jihad against invaders, jihad fought against the enemy, now it is economic jihad, building the economy, building the nation and people.

The government then encourages the growth of sharia banking, sharia insurance, sharia capital markets, and sharia pawnshops. "We build the laws, the fatwas, the institutions. We build the committees. The National Committee for Sharia Finance in Bappenas. Starting from 2020, it will not only be developed in the financial sector, but also in other sectors. KNEKS is no longer under Bappenas, but is appointed directly by the President," said Vice President Amin.

The Vice President, who is also the daily chairman of KNEKS, is also pushing for the development of KDEKS to stimulate the economy in all provinces in Indonesia. Currently, KDEKS has been officially established in 30 out of a total of 38 provinces in Indonesia. The eight provinces that do not have KDEKS are six provinces in Papua, East Nusa Tenggara, and Bali.

The province of North Sulawesi, where the majority of its population is Christian, also has its own economic development plan. "We empower and contribute to building the national economy towards Indonesia's advanced and prosperous future in 2045. Muslims must not be left behind, they must participate in the journey," added Vice President Amin, without mentioning any forbidden words.

Acting Governor of Banten, Al Muktabar, added that Banten Province, with a population of 12.5 million, is also continuously developing its shariah economic structure. With shariah economics, the resources that exist in Banten can be managed and enjoyed fairly by the entire community.

Currently, Banten has 17 giant industrial zones and over 4,000 business entities. According to Al Muktabar, Banten has also grown into an investment area with growth above 100 percent.

In Banten, Vice President Amin also attended the 131st anniversary event of Syekh Nawawi Al-Bantani's Haul at Pondok Pesantren Annawawi Tanara in Serang on Friday (3/5/2024) night. The Vice President revealed that Syekh Nawawi Al-Bantani had taught the importance of protecting human rights since the struggle for human rights was not yet widely known.

Even according to Sheikh Nawawi, if human rights clash with the rights of Allah, then human rights must take priority. "Sheikh Nawawi said, therefore the rights of the servant should take precedence over the rights of Allah, when the rights of Allah and humans collide, the rights of His servant should be prioritized, because Allah is tolerant," said Vice President Amin.

Because, according to Sheikh Nawawi, Allah delays His punishment to those who violate His rights until the hereafter. On the other hand, Allah will directly inflict punishment on those who violate the rights of other human beings or commit social sins in this world.

"I think these are extraordinary things. This relates to the issue of respecting human rights. So, when people talk about human rights now, Sheikh Nawawi already discussed this more than 100 years ago," said Vice President Amin.

Sheikh Nawawi Al-Bantani's full name is Muhammad Nawawi bin Umar bin Arabi bin Ali bin Jamad bin Janta bin Masbuqil Al-Bantani Al-Jawi. He was born in a small village in the Tirtayasa Sub-district (now Tanara Sub-district), Serang, Banten, in 1230 H/1813 M. Sheikh Nawawi was an internationally recognized Indonesian scholar who served as the Imam of Masjidil Haram.

He was given the title Al-Bantani because he originated from Banten, Indonesia. Sheikh Nawawi was an extremely productive scholar and intellectual who wrote more than 115 books covering various fields of study, including jurisprudence, monotheism, mysticism, interpretation, and hadith.
