Terror Shooting on the Surabaya-Gempol Toll Road Injures Four People

The East Java Regional Police are trying to uncover the case of shooting with an "airsoft" weapon against users of the Surabaya-Gempol Toll Road.

The Chief of Police of the City Police Resort in Surabaya, East Java, Commissioner Rudi Setiawan, displayed a car window with a hole caused by someone who used an airsoft gun on Thursday (15/3) at Surabaya City Police Headquarters. The Kijang Innova car belongs to the Head of Housing and Settlement Development, Urban Planning, and Regional Development Agency of Surabaya, Eric Tjahyadi.

SURABAYA, KOMPAS — In the last four days, users of the Surabaya-Gempol Toll Road in East Java have reported terror shootings. At least four people were injured as a result of shooting with airsoft weapons.

"We are assisting the investigation team of the Sidoarjo City Police in examining the CCTV (monitoring camera) at the Surabaya-Sidoarjo toll road to investigate the culprit of the shooting," said the Head of the Jatanras Subdirectorate of the East Java Regional Police Adjunct Commissioner Arbaridi Jumhur, on Wednesday (22/5/2024).

According to Arbaridi, the first shooting incident occurred on Sunday (May 19, 2024) near 02:30 AM before the Waru Toll Gate. The victim was Eko Cahyono, a truck driver from Jember, who was headed to Surabaya.

From his story, it was revealed that Eko was driving a truck bound for Surabaya in the early hours of Sunday. While driving the truck, the window was open.

The Bali Police's Narcotics Research Directorate uncovered a group of narcotics dealers involving foreign nationals. During the disclosure and arrest of the suspect in the narcotics case, the Bali Police Narcotics Directorate also confiscated three replica airsoft guns. All the evidence was shown at a press conference at the Bali Police, Denpasar City, Tuesday (30/5/2023).

Approaching the Waru Toll Gate, suddenly the truck was approached by a black SUV from the right. The front (passenger) seat window of the SUV rolled down and showed a man wearing white clothes and short hair pulling out a gun and shooting at Eko five times.

Arbaridi continued, another victim was Ramlan Waskito, a passenger in a truck who was hit by gunfire approaching the Waru Utama Toll Gate, Tuesday (21/5/2024), at around 04.00 WIB. Ramlan and his brother were in a truck bound for Tanjung Perak Port.

Tuesday (21/5/2024), the motorbike truck that Ramlan was riding in was suddenly approached by a black SUV from the left side. The truck window was indeed open. Ramlan was shocked because the window of the SUV next to him rolled down, then the driver took out a gun and shot several times. Ramlan was shot in the face and was injured.

Officers cut an airsoft gun confiscated by Customs and Excise and PT Pos Indonesia (Persero) as a result of monitoring imported goods at the Pasar Baru Customs Office, Jakarta, Friday (9/8/2019). A total of 7,972 confiscated items worth IDR 204 million were destroyed because they were subject to prohibitions or restrictions or the recipient did not have permission from the competent authority.

Separately, Head of Road Patrol Unit, Adjunct Senior Commissioner Imet Tamsil said that the shooting by the perpetrator from a black SUV car is a matter of attention for investigation.

"We are assisting the Jatanras investigation by checking toll road CCTV," he said.

Tamsil continued, Road Patrol will increase the intensity and frequency of patrols. PJR units throughout the toll road network have been warned about the potential for similar incidents. In addition, they will coordinate with traffic units to monitor and anticipate the potential for crime.

Regarding the shooting, toll road users are reminded to drive with caution. It is recommended to not lower the windows while driving, especially when approached or followed by other suspicious vehicles. Closed windows at least protect the driver and passengers from shootings or throwings.
