One STIP student dies after being assaulted by his senior, the perpetrator is believed to be more than one person

JAKARTA, KOMPAS - The case of abuse which killed Putu Satria Ananta Rastika (19), a cadet student at the Cilincing Maritime Science College, North Jakarta, must be thoroughly investigated. The perpetrator of the abuse is thought to be a senior and more than one person.

Satria allegedly died after being assaulted by a senior in the toilet of the Cilincing College of Sailing Science (STIP), North Jakarta, Friday (3/5/2024). Satria's body was taken to Bhayangkara Said Sukanto Hospital, Kramatjati, East Jakarta, for an autopsy.

The head of North Jakarta Police Commissioner Gidion Arif Setiawan stated on Saturday (May 4, 2024) that he had examined dozens of witnesses to uncover this case. Among the witnesses were 10 students who are suspected of being involved in the assault. Nevertheless, there has been no suspect identification yet.

According to Gidion, it is not difficult to uncover this case because everything is clearly recorded on the surveillance cameras (CCTV). He believes that the act of violence was beyond the scope of school activities as it is not stated in the curriculum.

Tumbur Aritonang, attorney for the family of Putu Satria Ananta Rastika, provided information regarding the case of Satria's death as a result of abuse by his senior in the STIP Cilincing area, North Jakarta, Saturday (4/5/2024). The family believes this abuse was carried out by more than one person.

When referring to CCTV recordings, Tumbur suspects that the perpetrators of the assault may be more than one person. Based on CCTV footage that directly leads to the school's toilet, there were at least four people who entered and left the campus toilet.

"I'm sure this is not a one-on-one fight, but more than that," he said.

Regarding the motive of the perpetrator, Tumbur suspects that this case is closely related to issues of seniority, alleged bullying, and revenge. "However, regarding the investigation, we leave it all to the police," said Tumbur.

In response to this incident, the family requested that the police act professionally in uncovering this case. "Until now, the deceased was known for his achievements and had no issues with his colleagues. It's understandable that the family is shocked to hear about this incident," said Tumbur.

The victim's grandfather, Ketut Lilia Murti, suspected that this abuse was caused by the senior's jealousy of his grandson. Because at his school, Satria is known as an outstanding student in academics and has a strong leadership spirit. Because of his leadership spirit, Satria was appointed as the main majorette. In fact, in the near future, Satria will take part in a student exchange program to China.

Series of cases

The case of violence resulting in Satria's death adds to the long list of violence cases in educational environments. The types of cases are diverse, but bullying and sexual violence cases remain the most prevalent despite the government having established anti-violence regulations in educational units.

As reported by Kompas.id on December 16, 2023, there were at least 136 cases of violence in the education sector that were recorded by mass media reporting throughout 2023. This totaled to 134 perpetrators and 339 victims, with 19 of them having died. This data was compiled by the Cahaya Guru Foundation on January 1 - December 10, 2023, through monitoring of certified mass media reporting by the Press Council.

Muhammad Mukhlisi, Executive Director of the Cahaya Guru Foundation, stated that from the records it means that 2-3 cases of violence occur in the education sector per week. This is an alarm for the education world that the current condition is not good.

"This is very worrying because these incidents are terrifying, with up to 19 deaths. The right to safe education for all is disrupted," said Mukhlisi.
