SURABAYA, KOMPAS - Prospective homebound travelers who will be taking the train must pay attention to regulations regarding baggage restrictions. There will be an additional fee of up to Rp 10,000 per kilogram if the baggage exceeds the maximum weight limit of 20 kilograms per person.

Public Relations Manager of PT Kereta Api Daop 8 Surabaya Luqman Arif said passengers are only allowed to carry free baggage with a maximum weight of 20 kilograms (kg) per person. The maximum volume of goods is 100 cubic decimeters with maximum dimensions of 70 cm x 48 cm x 30 cm. The maximum number is four bags or baggage items.

"If during boarding at the station the customer is found to be carrying baggage that exceeds these provisions, he will be subject to a duty or tariff of IDR 10,000 per kg for executive class. "Apart from that, the fare is IDR 6,000 per kg for business class and IDR 2,000 per kg for economy class," said Luqman, Monday (1/4/2024).

KAI provides overhead luggage racks above the seats for passengers to store their baggage. In addition, other spaces are provided that do not disturb or endanger passengers and do not cause damage to train facilities.

"Carrying luggage of more than 200 cubic decimeters (70 cm x 48 cm x 60 cm) is not allowed in the train cabin. Customers will be advised to transport their goods using the railway expedition service, such as KAI Logistics," he continued.

Luqman added that KAI also prohibits passengers from carrying certain items as baggage, namely animals, narcotics, psychotropic substances, and other addictive substances, firearms, and sharp objects. Also prohibited are flammable or explosive items, items with foul or pungent odors, or items that, due to their nature, may interfere with the health and comfort of other passengers.

KAI, he continued, also does not allow passengers to carry items that are prohibited by statutory regulations. Likewise with other items which, in the opinion of the boarding officer, are not suitable for carriage as baggage due to their condition or volume.

PT KAI data records that during the two days of the Eid transport period, namely Sunday (31/3/2024) and Monday (1/4/2024) until 10.00 local time, a total of 25,869 passengers had departed from a number of stations in the Daop 8 Surabaya area. .

From the data, it is recorded that on Sunday, 16,409 customers departed using trains from Surabaya Gubeng, the favorite station with 4,543 customers. As for Surabaya Pasarturi Station, there were 4,722 customers, and from Malang Station there were 2,544 customers.

On Monday, 9,460 customers departed by train with the highest departure rate of 2,585 customers from Surabaya Pasarturi Station. A total of 2,570 customers departed from Surabaya Gubeng Station and 1,989 customers from Malang Station.

Meanwhile, there are 32,608 long-distance train customers with destinations in Daop 8 Surabaya. Of that number, 15,882 customers arrived on Sunday and 16,726 customers arrived on Monday. As for Sunday, the most popular destination station was Surabaya Gubeng Station with 5,664 customers, followed by Surabaya Pasarturi Station with 4,206 customers and Malang Station with 2,032 customers.

On Monday, 16,726 customers are scheduled to arrive at Daop 8 Surabaya. The three favorite stations are Surabaya Gubeng Station with 5,896 customers, Surabaya Pasarturi Station with 4,088 customers, and Malang Station with 2,290 customers.

The customers at Daop 8 Surabaya are dominated by destinations such as Semarang, Cirebon, Yogyakarta, Bandung, Jakarta, Jember, and Banyuwangi. Meanwhile, the five favourite long-distance trains at Daop 8 Surabaya are KA Airlangga Surabaya Pasarturi-Pasar Senen, KA Probowangi Surabaya Gubeng-Ketapang, and KA Tawangalun Malang Kotalama-Ketapang.

In addition, the Jayabaya train serves the Malang-Surabaya-Pasar Senen route and the Sancaka train serves the Surabaya Gubeng-Yogyakarta route. During the Lebaran transportation period, KAI Daop 8 Surabaya operates 54 long-distance trains consisting of 43 regular long-distance trains and 11 additional long-distance trains, with a total of 30,340 seats available every day.

"The public can access the availability of train seats during the Eid 2024 transportation period through the Access by KAI application," said Luqman.

Indeed, it is also uncomfortable if the train is filled with too much luggage belonging to other passengers.

Darmajati (45), a train passenger from Surabaya, said that he has not had any unpleasant experiences regarding his luggage. The reason is that he and his family only bring necessary items, such as clothes and souvenirs, when traveling home.

"So far, we have never received any reprimands or penalties from KAI regarding carry-on items. Although, it is uncomfortable if the train is filled with too many carry-on items belonging to other passengers," said Damar.

Meanwhile, Siska (35), another passenger, said that she was most annoyed when she found a lot of luggage in the train carriage. The private employee had an unpleasant experience because she couldn't stretch her legs due to a suitcase placed under her seat.

"Usually in the economy class train, there are many belongings carried by passengers. Therefore, for long-distance trips, especially during holiday travel season, it is more comfortable to use the business or executive class train," said Siska.
