JAKARTA, KOMPAS — The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), on Wednesday evening (11/1/2023), officially arrested the governor of Papua, Lukas Enembe. He has been declared a suspect in a case of alleged corruption for receiving gratuities of Rp 1 billion (US$64,816.45) in connection to infrastructure-development projects in the province. Even after detaining Lukas, the KPK will continue to develop his case and other cases, including the parties allegedly involved.
Lukas' detention was officially conveyed by KPK Chairman Firli Bahuri at the Gatot Soebroto Army Central Hospital (RSPAD), Central Jakarta, on Wednesday. Lukas was detained for the first 20 days from 11 January 2023 to 30 January 2023 at the KPK Detention Center at Pomdam Jaya Guntur.
"Due to the health condition of the suspect LE [Lukas Enembe], a temporary treatment has been provided at the Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital from today until his condition improves according to the considerations of the team of doctors," said Firli.
The same thing was expressed by Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud MD. Separately, Mahfud said that the investigation into the alleged corruption case in Papua province will not stop after the KPK has detained the governor of Papua, Lukas Enembe. The central government promised to continue to closely monitor the movement of money in the accounts of the Papua provincial administration. In fact, some of the accounts of the Papua provincial administration have also been frozen to prevent fraud from happening again.
"This [Lukas Enembe's detention] is purely law enforcement and will not stop at Lukas," said Mahfud during a press statement at his office in Jakarta.
Lukas Enembe, who has been named a suspect in the alleged bribery and gratuities of Rp 1 billion since 5 September 2022, was previously arrested in Jayapura, Papua, on Tuesday (10/1). Lukas has been absent from several summons and questionings by KPK citing illness. In fact, the KPK "gave in" and had to question Lukas at his home. Even though his supporters were angry following Lukas' arrest, the situation in the city of Jayapura is now under control.
Furthermore, Mahfud emphasized that Lukas' arrest was purely a matter of law enforcement and had no other interests. "For this reason, the movement of money in the accounts of the Papua provincial administration is closely monitored by the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center (PPATK). Some local government accounts have also been frozen to prevent misuse that violates the law. The movement of money [in the] local government is now under our supervision and some [accounts] are frozen," said Mahfud.
After being arrested in Jayapura, on Tuesday at 12:30 WIT (10/1), and taken to the RSPAD, Lukas was examined by a team of doctors accompanied by KPK investigators and doctors. The medical check includes a physical examination of vital signs, laboratory and heart. The doctor concluded that Lukas needed temporary treatment at the RSPAD.
Head of the Gatot Soebroto Army Hospital, Lt. Gen. Dr. Budi Sulistya, revealed that Lukas’ health needs treatment and follow-up. Based on a medical check, Lukas’ health is better than yesterday.
However, in principle, said Firli, after everything has been completed, the KPK will immediately question him. "We will ensure that the completion of the investigation of this case is still carried out while complying with legal procedures and other legal provisions. This includes upholding the principle of the presumption of innocence, respect for human rights and fulfilling the rights of suspects as stipulated by existing law," said Firli.
Lukas' personal doctor, Anton Mote, hopes that his side can see Lukas' condition directly and coordinate with the doctor.
