Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Mahfud MD has urged the National Police to reveal more suspects in the murder case of Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat.
JAKARTA, KOMPAS - Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Mahfud MD has urged the National Police to reveal more suspects in the murder case of Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat, also known as Brigadier J. Mahfud also reminded the police to group the perpetrators, considering that aside from the murder, the case is also overrun with obstructions of justice. Mahfud, who was met after attending the commemoration of the 2022 Constitution Day and the 77th anniversary of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) at the House of Representatives complex in Jakarta on Thursday (18/8/2022), said the police were thoroughly investigating Nofriansyah’s murder.
“Yes, [the police] are serious [in handling the case]. There must be more [perpetrators],” he said.
In the murder case that occurred on 8 July, the police have named four suspects: former internal affairs chief Insp. Gen. Ferdy Sambo, Richard Eliezer Pudihang Lumiu, known as Bhayangkara Dua (Second Agent) E, Brig. Ricky Rizal and Kuat Maruf, who worked at Ferdy’s residence.
Ferdy was named a suspect once Eliezer confessed that he was ordered by his superior to kill Nofriansyah. Ferdy then confessed to investigators that he ordered Eliezer to shoot Nofriansyah in an emotional outburst after finding out that Nofriansyah had mistreated his wife, Putri Candrawathi, in Magelang, Central Java. Such an action was deemed to have hurt the family’s dignity.
Following that, Putri’s claim that she was sexually assaulted by Nofriansyah was dismissed by the police. There was no evidence to support the alleged sexual assault. When the case was first revealed on 11 July, the police cited allegations of sexual assault as the cause of a shoot-out between Nofriansyah and Eliezer, which left Nofriansyah dead.
Thus far, the police have questioned 63 officers. As many as 36 of them are suspected of violating the ethics code in efforts to obstruct the investigation of Nofriansyah’s murder.
Mahfud also reminded the police to place the perpetrators into three groups. The first group should consist of those that took part in Nofriansyah’s murder and must be punished. The second group should consist of those that obstructed the investigation, who must also be punished.
The third group should consist of those that carried out technical tasks, such as opening doors, delivering letters and guarding. They can only be subjected to disciplinary action. “[For those] that receive only disciplinary action, it is so that they can be forgiven because [they] only carried out their duties. It is enough to discipline them, there is no need for punishment,” said Mahfud.
False report
Meanwhile, Kamaruddin Simanjuntak, the attorney for Nofriansyah’s family, is preparing several new reports to submit to police investigators. These reports include Ferdy and his wife, Putri, as perpetrators of false reports, one of which is the accusation that Nofriansyah sexually assaulted Putri. “The [sexual assault] claim has been dismissed by investigators because there was no evidence to support it,” he said.
Kamaruddin will also report that money was stolen from Nofriansyah’s savings account after he was killed.
The evidence of this theft, according to Kamaruddin, has been confirmed by the head of the National Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim). According to the evidence, on 11 July, Ferdy transferred Rp 200 million (US$13,474) from Nofriansyah’s account to his own. This act can be linked to money laundering.
Public relations head Insp. Gen. Dedi Prasetyo said investigators had examined Putri as a witness in the case but was reluctant to share the results of the examination.
However, Dedi said that the special police team would present the latest updates on Nofriansyah’s murder on Friday (19/8/2022). The police’s Special Inspectorate will also present the results of its latest examination of ethics breaches committed by police officers.
According to Dedi, the results of Nofriansyah’s second autopsy will also be conveyed by the Indonesian Forensic Doctors Association soon. “During this time, the police will remain open, transparent and the process [of the investigation] will be supported by scientific evidence,” said Dedi.
