President Joko ‘Jokowi” Widodo has instructed National Police chief Gen. (Pol) Listyo Sigit Prabowo to fully disclose the events surrounding the death of Brigadier J.
Brigadier J or Brig. Nofriansyah Yosua Hutabarat was known to have died at the home of the National Police internal affairs (Propam) division head Insp. Gen. Ferdy Sambo on Friday, 8 July 2022, and was only revealed to the public on Monday, 11 July 2020.
On Tuesday, 12 July 2022, while in Subang, West Java, President Jokowi instructed that the case be processed legally. President Jokowi again issued an order and gave his support to the National Police chief while on a visit to Rinca Island, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara.
"Disclose it as is. Don't hide anything. Be transparent. It is important so that people do not have doubts about the events that occurred. It [the legal process] must be ensured. Public trust in the National Police must be maintained," said the President, as quoted by this daily on Friday, 22 July 2022.
The President's instructions are firm and clear. We support the President's statement. The handling of the case of the death of Brig. Nofriansyah, which was not transparent from the start, has revealed various irregularities. The narrative construction of "police shoot police" began to be questioned by the public following the new findings conveyed by the lawyer of the victim's family, that there were several cuts found on Nofriansyah's body.
The request by the family's lawyer for a re-autopsy on Nofriansyah's body, involving an independent doctor and doctors from the three forces in the Indonesian Military (TNI), indicates distrust of the forensic doctor who treated him previously. This is concerning.

Inspector General Ferdy Sambo has been removed from the position of Head of the Professional and Security Division of the National Police.
The National Police (Polri) is a big institution that gets a big budget from people's taxes. The task of the National Police is to treat the community, protect the community, enforce the law and maintain security. The questionable treatment and the tragic death of Brigadier J from the start could affect public confidence in the police institution. This situation is worrying.
These steps facilitate the investigation.
We support the step of the National Police chief to form a special team to investigate this case. We appreciate the steps taken by the National Police chief to suspend the head of the Propam Division, Ferdy Sambo, the head of the Internal Security Bureau, Brig. Gen. (Pol) Hendra Kurniawan and the South Jakarta Police chief, Comr. Heru Budhi Susianto, which is also in line with the pressure of public opinion. These steps facilitate the investigation.
We encourage the police to uncover this case as soon as possible so that wild speculation can stop. The slower the handling of the case, the wilder the speculation will be, and that is detrimental to the police. In an open era like today, openness of the investigation must be the key.
Second Agent (Bharada) E of the shootout with Brigadier J, should be questioned about what really happened. According to the police, Ferdy was not at the scene because he was undergoing a PCR test, it was time for him to be questioned too to get information so that the situation can become clear. As President Jokowi said, there is no need to cover up anything, because it will affect public confidence in the police!
