The inauguration of president-elect Joko Widodo and vice president-elect Ma\'ruf Amin on Sunday, 20 October, 2019 will be the culmination of a procedural democratic ritual.
This nation saw political contestation that almost divided this republic on social media. This nation should be grateful that the losing contestant who competed in the presidential election on 17 April 2019, Prabowo Subianto-Sandiaga Uno, continued to follow the constitutional mechanism in challenging the election results. The Constitutional Court\'s decision was accepted by all parties.
Members of the House of Representatives (DPR) and Regional Representatives Council (DPD) were inaugurated on 1 October, 2019. Now, the Indonesian people are waiting for the inauguration of president-elect Jokowi and vice president-elect Ma\'ruf Amin. The Jokowi-Jusuf Kalla leadership will be recorded in Indonesian political history. The Jokowi-Kalla team was the first civilian president and vice presidents — outside of the founding father Sukarno — that could complete his leadership in five years. President Jokowi and Ma\'ruf Amin were given the mandate to develop Indonesia in 2019-2024.
The achievements and maturity of the Indonesian people\'s democracy must be appreciated. Democracy has become increasingly consolidated. Let the Indonesian people enjoy the presidential inauguration ceremony on Sunday, 20 October, 2019. The security forces must ensure that the presidential inauguration program runs safely and smoothly. There must not be a vacuum of power. Demonstrations are part of human rights, but it would be ideal if the rallies did not interfere with the president\'s inauguration.
This nation should be grateful to Vice President Jusuf Kalla, who has accompanied President Jokowi for five years. On 20 October, 2019, Kalla will officially relinquish his post as vice president. Kalla was already prepared for that and positioned himself as the father of the nation and was expected to continue to contribute to the nation.
The festivities of the inauguration should not be too long. They should be ready for immediate work given the challenges facing this nation are not easy. Procedural democracy must be transformed into a substantive democracy. The threat of a global economic recession, radicalism and increasing intolerance, rampant corruption, wide socio-economic inequalities, restructuring of the electoral system and fulfilling the campaign promises demand attention. Political consolidation, legal consolidation, military consolidation must be the priority of the Jokowi-Amin government.
There is a lot of work ahead of us, including the controversy over the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Law, the controversial Criminal Code bill (RKUHP), the controversy over the Land Bill and the mining bill.
That is why the Cabinet formed by Jokowi-Amin must offer hope, offer optimism to meet difficult times. There is a lot of work ahead of us, including the controversy over the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Law, the controversial Criminal Code bill (RKUHP), the controversy over the Land Bill and the mining bill.
The posture of the new Cabinet should not just aim at giving surprises or attracting public attention without taking into account political ethics. A minister must be able to immediately work to move the bureaucratic machine. The magnitude of the problem requires the concentration of our nation’s leaders. Ma\'ruf Amin should also step down as head of the Indonesian Ulema Council.
