In the face of tsunami threats, the response of residents living in coastal areas has been getting better. The regional governments are also quick in evacuating the residents.
JAKARTA, KOMPAS — The 6.9-magnitude earthquake that occurred 164 kilometers southwest of Pandeglang, Banten, raised a tsunami warning on Friday (8/2/2019) at 7:03 p.m. Residents who learned from the tsunami experience on 22 December 2018 immediately rushed away from the coast to higher ground.
This rapid response was shown by residents living in Pandeglang in Banten, and South Lampung in Lampung. As soon as the earthquake happened, residents did not wait too long to rush away from the coast.
In Pandeglang, evacuation of the residents was assisted by officers of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Disaster Preparedness Cadets, and the police. Officers in 10 districts also took to the field to ensure that there were no residents 200 meters from the coast and to record the damage.
There was panic because the electricity went out after the earthquake. However, residents were still able to get to higher ground.
"The residents have already evacuated. There are no reports of injuries yet," said Ade Nuranwar, a doctor at the Sumur Community Health Center.
President Joko Widodo said at the Merdeka Palace on Friday evening that he had asked the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the Indonesian Military (TNI), the National Police and Social Affairs Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita to act quickly to handle the impacts of the earthquake. The President also continued to monitor the condition of the people affected by the earthquake and asked the people to remain calm, but be alert.
Pandeglang Regent Irna Narulita said the district heads had been given the task of monitoring the impacts of the earthquake and the condition of the evacuees. On Saturday (3/8) morning, the Pandeglang regency administration will establish public kitchens to serve around 33,000 evacuees.
"The people have learned from the tsunami disaster last year. They know how to save themselves," said Irna.
On 22 December 2018, Pandeglang, Serang, and South Lampung were hit by a tsunami due to the volcanic activities of Mount Anak Krakatau. Collective memories of the tsunami forced the residents of Banten and South Lampung to immediately save themselves during a strong earthquake.
Sabtudin, Rajabasa district head in South Lampung regency, said that residents along the coast of South Lampung were in panic and ran out of their houses. The residents fled to higher ground upon hearing a tsunami warning from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG).
In Jakarta, the earthquake caused the MRT to stop operating for 10 minutes and 43 seconds. Residents in tall buildings also rushed out the buildings.
No tsunami
BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati ended the tsunami early warning at 9:35 p.m. After obtaining more data from various seismographs, the BMKG also revised the strength of the earthquake, from 7.4-magnitude to 6.9-magnitude. The epicenter, which was originally said to be at a depth of 10 kilometers, was revised to 48 km. The epicenter was at 7.32 degrees south latitude and 104.75 degrees east longitude.
BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Division head Daryono said that with the location of the epicenter and the depth of its hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was classified as a shallow earthquake due to rock deformation in the Indo-Australian Plate.
"The results of the analysis of the source mechanism show that the earthquake was triggered by oblique broken fragment, namely a combination of horizontal and rising movements," said Daryono.
