PDI-P hopes that Prabowo-Gibran will oversee the 2024 regional elections democratically without fraud and abuse of power.

JAKARTA, KOMPAS — The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle hopes that the elected president and vice president, Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka, can oversee the democratic regional head election event. They want the fraud and abuse of power that occurred during the presidential election not to be repeated in 2024 Pilkada.

This was revealed by several regional leadership board (DPD) chairs of the PDI-P party during a press conference on the second day of the PDI-P's Fifth National Working Meeting at Beach City International Stadium, Ancol, Jakarta on Saturday (25/5/2024). They admitted to feeling intimidated and experiencing the abuse of state apparatus, including government programs during the presidential election (pilpres).

The Chairman of the National PDI-P Election Campaign Team, Adian Napitupulu, stated that the fraud that occurred during the presidential election should not be repeated in the 2024 regional elections. If Indonesia wanted to unite, the issues during the presidential election should be considered resolved so as not to disturb the process of consolidating regional elections in the regions.

"We hope that the issue of the presidential election will be resolved during the election, and not be brought down to the regional elections. If we want to talk about Indonesia as one nation, discussing the integrity of the nation and state, then one issue is resolved in one issue so as not to disturb the process of regional election consolidation," said Adian.

Prabowo-Gibran will officially become president and vice president when they are inaugurated on October 20 2024. At that time, the regional election stages were still ongoing. The winner of the 2024 presidential election will also lead the country when voting for the regional elections takes place in November 2024.

The same sentiment was expressed by the Chair of the PDI-P Regional Leadership Council (DPD) in North Sumatra, Rapidin Simbolon, the Chair of the PDI-P DPD in West Java, Ono Surono, the Chair of the PDI-P DPD in South Sulawesi, Andi Ridwan Wittiri, the Chair of the PDI-P DPD in Maluku, Benhur G Watubun, and the Chair of the PDI-P DPD in West Papua, Daya Joppye Onesimus Wayangkau.

Collaboration opportunities

On the other hand, the PDI-P regional leadership stated that the process of exploring prospective candidates for the provincial and district/city elections is still ongoing. The political party with the white-faced bull logo also opens up opportunities to collaborate with other parties, including political opponents during the presidential election.

Rapidin Simbolon explained that the current political map in North Sumatra demands that PDI-P oppose one of the potential candidates, who is also a former member, Bobby Nasution. President Joko Widodo's son-in-law will be a tough opponent for the candidate supported by PDI-P.

"Out of the 33 regencies/cities in North Sumatra, PDI-P won in 10 regions and placed itself as the head of the DPRD. It also successfully placed its members as leading figures in 14 regencies/cities. In total, we were able to field our own candidates in 12 regencies/cities," said Rapidin.

Meanwhile, Ono Surono revealed that the political map in West Java is very fluid because all political parties are still conducting lobbying efforts. Nevertheless, PDI-P is aware that as the fourth largest seat winner, they will not pursue the position of West Java Governor or Jabar 1, but instead Jabar 2 or Vice Governor.
