MAGELANG, KOMPAS — Rijqi Maulana (15), a student from Wonosobo Regency, Central Java, was run over by the truck he was traveling in, on Jalan Raya Magelang-Purworejo, in Kaliabu Village, Salaman District, Magelang Regency, Central Java, Wednesday (1/5/2024). With serious injuries suffered, the victim died immediately at the scene.

The accident occurred on Wednesday (1/5/2024) at approximately 10:10am. At that time, two young men, friends of the victim, attempted to stop a truck with license plate AA 8319 OK that was passing from Purworejo District to Magelang. However, the truck driver did not comply with their request and continued driving at a slow speed. In the midst of this situation, the victim suddenly jumped into the truck's bed.

"The victim successfully entered the back of the truck, but then slipped and finally fell under the left rear wheel," said the head of the Magelang City Police Resort (Polresta), Senior Commissioner Mustofa, in a press conference on Friday (3/5/2024). It was known that the victim suffered severe injuries to the head as well as a broken neck and arm.

Rijqi Maulana is a resident of Kertek District, Wonosobo Regency. He is known to be a member of the group street children or what are known as "punk" children. At that time, the victim and his colleagues allegedly wanted to hitch a ride because they aimed to go to a place where street children usually hang out and busk on the border of Magelang City and Regency in Mertoyudan District, Magelang Regency.

In this case, Mustofa said, no one was named as a suspect or perpetrator who triggered the incident.

"The truck did not crash and was unable to stop because it was carrying goods. This accident can be attributed solely to the negligence or reckless behavior of the victim," he said.

The truck was driven by Setyawan (57), a resident of Mungkid District, Magelang Regency. Currently, the truck being driven by the individual is still detained by the police for investigation purposes, as part of a series of processes to expedite efforts to provide compensation and condolences to the victim's family.

Road accidents rank third in the world as a cause of death for children and adolescents.

In many instances, street children are often known to recklessly enter and board the back of trucks. The same is also commonly done by football supporters when they are going to watch their favorite club outside of their home stadium. However, fatal incidents that result in casualties are relatively rare.

According to him, trucks with open back trays are prohibited from carrying passengers because their purpose is to transport goods. Residents, including street children, should not attempt to recklessly jump into the back of a truck while the vehicle is in motion.

"For personal safety, before jumping into the bed, make sure the truck you are traveling in is stopped," he said.

Apart from non-compliance with traffic regulations, citing data from the World Health Organization (WHO) and Unicef, according to Hari, traffic accidents in children and adolescents are also triggered by a number of factors, including ability children and teenagers when driving, limited safety facilities when driving, inadequate traffic regulations for children, and traffic density when driving. The lack of green open space which makes children play around traffic lanes also has an impact on the high number of traffic accidents.
