JAKARTA, KOMPAS — Apart from MDS (20), the police have named another suspect in the assault case on David (17). South Jakarta Metro Police Chief Comr. Ade Ary said that based on the examination of witnesses, facts and evidence, MDS's friend, SLR (19) or S, a resident of Srengseng, West Jakarta, was named a suspect.
"S recorded the [persecution] act," Ade said in Jakarta on Friday (24/2/2023).
From Shane, on 17 Jan. 2023, MDS learned that his girlfriend, APA (15), her status now as a witness, had received bad treatment from David when she was still dating the victim.
Receiving the information, MDS became annoyed and seemed to find an outlet for his anger when S provoked him to punish David. "If I were you, [I] would beat him. That's bad Den [MDS]," S was quoted by Ade as saying.
On Monday (20/2), MDS, S and A, using a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon with a fake police number as it was found later, went to meet David, who lives at a residential complex at Pesanggrahan. A contacted David, saying she wanted to return his student card. With David aboard, they headed to a location.
MDS asked S to make a recording using the former's mobile phone. Getting off, David was led to the back of the car. MDS told him to do push-ups 50 times. Being able to do only 20, David was told to beg pardon in a way demonstrated by S. He refused it.
“David was again told to get into a push-up position. Given the recording from a CCTV and the MDS cellphone, the witness said it was what had happened. [MDS] did acts of violence by kicking, stepping on, hitting the victim's head and stomach [while David was] in push-up position," Ade said.
S is liable to criminal charge under Article 76 c in relation to Article 80 of Law No. 35/2014 as an amendment to Law No. 23/2002 concerning child protection. S has been named the suspect for allegedly allowing child persecution.
David was again told to get into a push-up position.
Regarding witness A, the police said they were still looking into it.
The assault case has also expose to the public the wealth of MDS' father Rafael Alun, an official at the directorate general of taxation at the Finance Ministry. As circulating on social media, MDS is seen showing off riding a big luxury motorbike.
Amid the public’s uproar about lavish lifestyle and suspicion about Rafael's wealth especially, Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati moved to remove Rafael from his position for the purpose of examining his wealth and assets.
Sri Mulyani said she had instructed the ministry’s inspector general to examine whether Rafael had amassed his assets in a fair manner. "As part of the Finance Ministry's investigation, starting today, I ask RAT to be removed from his duty and position. The basis for the removal is Article 31 Paragraph [1] PP [government regulation] No. 94/2021 concerning discipline for civil servants," she said, mentioning Rafael in his initial.
Rafael then resigned from his status as a state civil servant altogether, which he said in a written statement became in effect starting 24 Feb.
Rafael stated he apologized to the family of David, the victim of his son’s assault. His remorse was also directed to the big family of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) organizational board, GP Ansor, Indonesian people and civil servants at the Finance Ministry.
NU and its youth wing GP Ansor were mentioned in the written statement given the fact the victim's father was a board member of GP Ansor.
"I am still ready to undergo questionings for clarification regarding the LHKPN and comply with the legal process for what had been done by my son," the statement reads, referring to state apparatus’ wealth report.
With the case implicating MDS and Rafael under public scrutiny, Vice President Ma'ruf Amin appealed to government officials of all levels to live an austere lifestyle, saying that it would help maintain trust of the public as taxpayers.
“Regarding the simple life, I think it should be the lifestyle of officials from top to bottom. The [Finance] Minister has done properly," he said on Friday. The Vice President was making his statement while visiting the Siola Matahari posyandu (integrated health service station) in Mamuju district, Mamuju regency, West Sulawesi.
Expulsion from campus
A strong reaction has been shown by Prasetya Mulya University where MDS studied, with the institution, following a leadership board meeting, deciding to expel MDS.
Tarakanita 1 Senior High School, the almamatet of A, has also reacted by issuing a statement. While stating that it does not tolerate bullying and expressing concern about what happened to David, Tarakanita says it has taken action against A in accordance with the school rules and in reference to the law, including on child protection.
When contacted by Kompas regarding possible sanctions given to A, the school had yet to respond.
