However, the respectful position of a teacher has fallen apart after reading the daily investigative report titled : Prospective Professors Involved in 'Joki' Scheme for Research Papers. A joki refers to a person who provides a service in the making of a scientific paper or other works in exchange for financial rewards.
The practice of a joki in the academic world in a number of public and private universities in Indonesia has occurred massively and systematically in making scientific papers for academic graduation requirements to apply for professorships in both public and private campuses.
The practice of a joki involves campus structural officials, lecturers and students. Lecturers and students who need scientific work can also use the services of intermediaries from outside the campus. In fact, many lecturers and prospective professors have been tricked into using the services of the management of a fake international scientific journal, the Budapest International Research and Critics Institute (BIRCI), which turned out to have an office on the outskirts of Deli Serdang regency, North Sumatra (Kompas, 10/2/2023).
The modus operandi is to form a special team to prepare articles for publication in reputable international journals. The team included the names of senior lecturers who wanted to become professors or be promoted as writers in scientific work, even though they did not have an active contribution in making the work to be published. This step is suspected to boost credit scores and improve campus accreditation.
It is not easy to get the title of professor. Data from the Education, Culture, Research and Technology Ministry shows that 64 percent of professors' proposals, totaling 4,862 names, were rejected. Proposed names of professors reached 7,598 names. One of the reasons for the rejection was that the scientific paper attached as a requirement for candidacy to be published in a journal was not qualified.
The existence of a professor will raise the prestige of a university. Therefore, it is understandable if the leaders of higher education institutions wish to have many professors on their campuses. However, efforts should not ignore ethics. Moreover, the position of the teacher is very valuable in society. No nation can have intelligent, educated people if they do not respect teachers.
In the history of education in this country, this is not the first time that the figure of a teacher, including lecturers and professors, has been tarnished. This daily has repeatedly reported on teachers involved in violence in schools and the majority of the victims were students. In tertiary institutions there have been repeated reports of the practice of a joki in university entrance exams, of bribery practices in the writing of a thesis and dissertation, and of lecturers or professors including those with professorships who claimed the work or plagiarized the work of their students.
These crimes and ethical violations are committed for the sake of having a higher education status, a higher academic degree or a position. Remember, a teacher is not a political position. Teachers are the spring of inspiration and goodness in life for its citizens.
