Elections and their stages are linked to the role of political parties. In fact, according to the 1945 Constitution, nominations for president/vice president may only be made by a party or coalition of political parties. The nomination of people's representatives in the regions or nomination of regional heads, of which the regional head elections (pilkada) will also be held next year, may be submitted or carried out by individuals or independent candidates.
Political parties can "release" (or suspend membership of) their cadres to become candidates for members of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD). In fact, some members of the DPD for the 2019-2024 period may be in Senayan (the legislative office complex) because they have received support from their political parties. Some of them still show their loyalty to the political party where they first joined.
The consideration or preamble in the Law (UU) No 2/2008, which was amended by Law No 2/2011, concerning political parties, stipulates that political parties are a means of people's political participation in developing democratic life to uphold accountable freedom. In a democracy, political parties do not only live from their cadres and administrators, but also from the people. In fact, in elections, the success of a party depends on public trust. The victory of political parties in elections is determined by the number of votes of the people, most of whom may not be members or cadres.
Thus, the party cannot turn its back on its voters, who are the people of this country. Ahead of the elections, as reported by this daily, in early 2023 a number of parties continued to heat up their political machines. The parties hold activities, such as commemorating their birthday, inaugurating the office for their campaign team or other activities that can serve as a vehicle for internal consolidation or as a forum to get closer to the grassroots. This is an ordinary activity, not a campaign (Kompas, 8/1/2023).
The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), on Tuesday (10/1/2023), will celebrate its 50th anniversary. General chairwoman Megawati Soekarnoputri encouraged her cadres to present concrete programs through a movement to educate the people and improve the people's standard of living.
The Gerindra Party held a national leadership meeting. General chairman of Gerindra, Prabowo Subianto, emphasized teamwork to win the 2024 election. On the other hand, the NasDem Party is consolidating itself by announcing a presidential candidate, Anies R Baswedan, while waiting for support from other parties. Other political parties carry out various activities to ensure their readiness to compete in the upcoming elections.
The existence of political parties is inextricably linked to the struggle for power. The consolidation that is now being implemented should be a way of ensuring that one is ready to win and ready to lose, not looking for any strategy to win the election. Remember, the Law on Political Parties emphasizes that one of the goals of establishing a party is to protect and maintain the integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. It is not just about winning elections.
