Indonesia was founded by mothers and fathers as a unitary state in the form of a republic. In the republic, the state acts fully to serve public interest. However, the emergence of the mafia has torn the noble ideals of the establishment of this republican state so that the public interest, especially the prosperity and welfare of the people, is neglected from the objectives of the administration of the state.
The Republic for the public interest is surrounded by a mafia network that operates in almost all lines of state administration. Mafia nomenclature and practice have become inherent in the implementation of state life, including budget mafia; the mafia on taxes, land, mines, coal, oil, rice, sugar, meat, medical devices and social assistance; and judicial and legal mafia. There is almost no space in the administration of the state that is free from the practice and network of mafia crime. The judicial mafia is the worst representation of the practice and the network of mafia crime is so systematic and institutionalized in the state because "most of the bribes are paid as part of the complicated network of well-organized regulations, which involve a number of corrupt actors, not just a handful of disobedient individuals" (Assegaf 2002; Butt and Lindsey, 2010).
This is the practice of the judicial mafia that damages the joints of the Republic of Indonesia as a law state. The mafia is never obedient to legal law, but taken through bribery and corruption in illegal practices.
Mafia's practices and networks revealed to public space are actually only small sparks from the emergency condition of the republic state, which has been under mafia siege for years. Even state administrators, ranging from local and regional to national levels, recognize the practice of mafia and not just a few even become part of the mafia. They actually serve, not the interests of the state and the people, but the interests of the mafia.
In fact, they are the traitors of the country. The Republic of Indonesia, which was established for the interests and benefit of the public, is even betrayed by those who should be devoted to the state, but instead are involved in the mafia network for their interests and their cronies. They not only betray the noble mandate of the founders of the nation so that the republic is managed for the interests of the people, but also hamper joint efforts to advance Indonesia.
Optimism about the realization of Indonesia as a developed country even faces internal obstacles from those who only think of enjoying personal welfare and personal luxury through mafia crimes in the midst of poverty and the hardship of its people. The public, especially the small people, become victims of the practice of mafia in the country. The practice and network of mafia crime has slowed the republic’s advances and made it stumble, so that the people could not immediately enjoy the promises of independence entrusted by the founders of the nation more than 77 years ago.
To prevent Indonesia from behaving like a mafia state or even falling into a mafia state, all leaders must stand at the front guard to save Indonesia, which is in a state of emergency, from the practice and network of mafia crime. This joint-rescue effort can be realized through the reinforcement of national commitment in the Unitary State of Indonesia in the form of a republic oriented for the public interest.
The political will to realize Indonesia's dream as a developed republican state and for the public interest must start from the courage and moral firmness of all country leaders to lead the national movement to eradicate the practice and network of mafia crime in all lines of national and state life. Without this national movement, all endeavors and long struggles to realize Indonesia as a developed country only provide benefits to the mafia, not to the people.
The practice of mafia has proven to damage the core of the republic, which is devoted to the public interest, especially that of the small people. The promise of the Proclaimer and Founder of the Republic, Sukarno, on 1 June 1945 that "there is no poverty in an independent Indonesia" must be a collective awareness of all leaders to free the people from poverty, malnutrition and underdevelopment, and at the same time realize the promise of prosperity and welfare in the small people's lives.
The partisanship of and the struggle for the small people suddenly recalls the old memory of Ahmad Syafii Maarif's message in his old age: "All of this is at the end of the wandering. Hopefully Indonesian young people really want to defend the small people." This prophetic message applies inclusively, aimed at all young generations of interfaith as the future owners of Indonesia, to hold fast to the ideals of the republic for the public interest and fight together for the prosperity and welfare of the people.
