SUKOHARJO, KOMPAS — Muhammadiyah and its women’s wing Aisyiyah are committed to continuing to promote progressive Islamic views. Not only internally, this view will also be disseminated to various groups in the country and the world so that the Islamic ideas that advance, build optimism and bring peace can become a guideline for human life.
The treatise on progressive Islam became one of the formulations produced in the 48th Congress of Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah at the Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta, Sukoharjo, Central Java, Saturday-Sunday (19-20/11/2022). Disseminating the view of progressive Islam is one of the mandates given by congress participants to the central executive boards of both Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah for the 2022-2027 period.
"We have the task of disseminating and making progressive Islamic views contained in the treatises of progressive Islam to be further discussed with various groups inside and outside the country, so that the views of Islam that are progressive and bring blessings to the universe become a world of thought that spreads, expands and is better implemented in the organization," said Haedar Nashir, who was re-elected as the chairman of Muhammadiyah for the 2022-2027 term after the organization’s plenary session on Sunday afternoon.
Haedar was again trusted to lead Muhammadiyah in a consensus involving 13 members of the Muhammadiyah Central Executive Board. Apart from Haedar, Abdul Mu'ti has also been named as general secretary of Muhammadiyah for the 2022-2027 term. Other members of the executive board include Anwar Abbas, Busyro Muqoddas, Hilman Latief, Muhadjir Effendy, Syamsul Anwar, Agung Danarto, Saad Ibrahim, Syafiq A Mughni, Dadang Kahmad, Ahmad Dahlan Rais and Irwan Akib.
In addition, other executive board members include Siti Noordjannah Djohantini, Siti Aisyah, Rohimi Zam Zam, Masyitoh, Latifah Iskandar, Atiyatul Ulya, Evi Sofia Inayati, Rita Pranawati, Diyah Suminar, Siti Muslimah Widyastuti and Diyah Puspitarini.
While the congress of its women’s wing Aisyiyah appointed Salmah Orbayinah as general chairman and Nur Rochimah as general secretary of Aisyiyah’s central executive board. In addition, other executive board members include Siti Noordjannah Djohantini, Siti Aisyah, Rohimi Zam Zam, Masyitoh, Latifah Iskandar, Atiyatul Ulya, Evi Sofia Inayati, Rita Pranawati, Diyah Suminar, Siti Muslimah Widyastuti and Diyah Puspitarini.
The congresses of Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah were officially closed by Vice President Ma'ruf Amin on Sunday evening. In his remarks, the Vice President reminded the importance of commitment to maintain a moderate view of Islam because it had become the identity of the nation. So far, the practice of moderate Islam that is implemented in Indonesia has become an example for other countries because religious practices carried out by society can promote a spirit of tolerance.
The Vice President also stated that the conference had confirmed the role of Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah to contribute to advancing the nation. The results of the congress are expected to be implemented in real terms. One of which is through Muhammadiyah and Aisyiyah educational institutions. "I am sure, 'the Sun' will continue to become a shining light in coping with challenges and problems for the people, nation and humanity," said the Vice President in reference to the rising sun as the symbol of Muhammadiyah.
Strategic issues
According to Haedar, progressive Islam is related to Islamic views that bring peace, unity and build optimism. Apart from that, it is also a view which presents the advancement of life for the whole society, nation, state and universal humanity.
The congress also gave a mandate to leaders to continue to discuss strategic issues of universal humanity, nationality and humanity to all elements of the nation in accordance with their respective roles and positions. "Therefore, the results of this congress will continue to be used as important input for various parties, such as the government, the House of Representatives (DPR), law enforcement and other institutions," said Haedar.
Meanwhile, Salmah Orbayinah said that Aisyiyah had long experience in carrying out a national role, including promoting peace, increasing women's welfare in various fields and improving the quality of human resources through educational institutions.
