Political parties and party coalitions can begin registering their nominated presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs between September 7-13, 2023. Although it is still a year away, a battle between political parties has already begun.
Recently, there have been allegations that the 2024 election will not run fairly. One of the latest discourses is that the presidential election was designed to only allow two candidate pairs to contest. Others have argued that these were baseless accusations.
This issue needs to be monitored and responded to quickly and accurately by all election organizers. As a young democracy said to still be flawed, Indonesia is still highly vulnerable to political conflict (Political Psychology 2021).
Currently, the world, including Indonesia, is not doing well. Both the energy and financial crises threaten the earth’s population, including our archipelago. These two crises should not be interwoven with politics.
It’s been long known that there are pros and cons to the system of having political parties nominate presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs. It began with a regulation concerning political parties’ exclusive right to nominate candidates, in accordance with the Constitution. Civil society groups have encouraged independent presidential candidates. But because it had already been agreed upon by the law, we must accept that as a rule of the game.
On the other hand, the presidential threshold had only been implemented since the 2004 presidential election. Only the threshold percentage has changed from time to time. Consequently, political parties participating in the election will not be able to nominate their choice of presidential and vice presidential candidates.
Law No. 7/2017 concerning the general election requires that only political parties or groups of parties that have at least 20 percent of the House of Representatives seats or 25 percent of the popular vote in the previous election have the right to nominate a candidate pair.
This is where political party executives must exercise their expertise in cooperating with other political parties, while having sharp intuition in knowing which presidential and vice presidential candidates voters idolize.
The politics of prejudice and hatred need to be minimized. Such politics arise only out of frustration, a superiority complex, feeling threatened and having an authoritarian personality (Idhamsyah, Eka Putra, Yuni Nurhamida, 2021).
The kind of politics that needs to be put forward is healthy politics. Working together to find solutions as the goal of politics is to control the state and create an effective government to allow the people to prosper. For the sake of the people, politics should not be used to benefit an individual, a group or make the people miserable.
