Developing a Sense of Brotherhood in the Nation's Youth
Taliah Salsabila, a student of one of the MTs (Islamic junior high schools) in Nagekeo regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), previously left for Labuan Bajo to take part in the NTT Regional Jamboree (Jamda) on 2-6 August.
The National Jamboree XI for the Scout Movement is a place to develop a sense of brotherhood as well as to build life skills for Penggalang (Second Class) scouts throughout Indonesia.
For the week of 14-21 August 2022, as many as 8,042 Penggalang scouts merged in a variety of activities at the National Jamboree (Jamnas) XI for the Scout Movement on the Cibubur campsite and Graha Wisata, East Jakarta. Scout representatives from various regencies/cities developed a sense of brotherhood, practiced skills and developed insights, as well as having valuable experiences.

Maumere physical exercises in the main field of the Cibubur campsite and Graha Wisata (Buperta) united the participants at the closing of the Jamnas XI, united by the theme: Happiness, Dedication and Achievement. The participants reached a peak of excitement mixed with emotion when they threw boni (Girl Scout hats) and beret (Boy Scout hats) into the air. They dissolved in warm hugs while saying goodbye to each other.
"It is exciting to be able to do the Maumere exercises together. Moreover, I know the movements,” said Cathrina, a participant in Jamnas XI from Kwarda lampung (chapter). She hopes, even though Jamnas is over, that the kinship between participants will continue.
However, it was not fatigue that was visible, rather a sense of happiness that radiated outward because they could get such valuable experiences at a young age.
The journey to Jamnas XI really challenged the participants from many regions physically and mentally. However, it was not fatigue that was visible, rather a sense of happiness that radiated outward because they could get such valuable experiences at a young age.
Taliah Salsabila, a student of one of the MTs (Islamic junior high schools) in Nagekeo regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), previously left for Labuan Bajo to take part in the NTT Regional Jamboree (Jamda) on 2-6 August. After participating in the Jamda, Taliah and the team from NTT boarded a ship for four days to Jakarta. "Arriving at Cibubur on 9 August, they immediately set up a tent," said Taliah.
To be chosen as a participant of Jamnas, held every five years, is a beautiful gift from the scout activity in which Taliah had taken part since the level of Tenderfoot. "I can be independent. At first I couldn't cook, so I started learning to cook. I also overcame my fear when I had to be alone," she said.
Digital skills
Activities during Jamnas XI of the Scout Movement not only strengthen scouting skills. Scout members also get provisions to utilize digital technology productively when doing activities in digital villages and
cloud technology. They were invited to strengthen digital literacy by learning to use digital technology, understand digital culture and digital media ethics, as well as security in the digital world.
They showed the content containing activities they followed during Jamnas, which was worth uploading in the Scout Super Apps or social media.
At the West Java Scout Super App Booth, participants were invited to create content with the narratives of 5W + 1H in their gadgets. One by one the participants in the female morning shift came to Kak (Brother) Ismail Edwin, a coach from the West Java Kwarda Information Center. They showed the content containing activities they followed during Jamnas, which was worth uploading in the Scout Super Apps or social media.
Excitement was also seen in the booth of Pandi or manager of the Indonesian internet-domain name, who invited participants to use gadgets to learn local languages digitally. "I was in school to learn Javanese characters, but with handwriting. It’s exciting to be able to do it digitally," said one participant.
Hikkayana, an eighth-grade junior-high-school student in Kolaka regency, Southeast Sulawesi, was satisfied when she was successful in creating a website containing information about Jamnas. There were also other groups that created a site about local wisdom in their area.
Future provision
The chairperson of the National Kwartir (board) of the Scout Movement, Budi Waseso, said that with the various knowledge, skills, experiences and insights received during Jamnas, Jamnas participants received provisions for their future lives. In 2045, when Indonesia attains a golden period, these National Jamnas participants will be 34-38 years old.
"At that time, we hope that all the young adults can become leaders in various fields. Make the learning process and experience of this Jamnas become a memento and learning process that is very valuable for the future of all youth," Budi said.
A number of important figures, one of whom was with Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin when he had been a participant in the Scout Jamnas in 1977 at Sibolangit campsite, North Sumatra, also encouraged and motivated the youth in a meeting.
"The future of the nation is in your hands. Therefore, use your time to continue to learn and work hard to achieve and pursue your dreams to the highest. God willing, when you meet again, among you there will be those who have become important persons in our beloved Indonesian country," he said.
