This nation’s energy is needed to solve several strategic problems. Do not let this energy go to waste in political prejudices and speculations.
Recently, these political prejudices and speculations have not only spun across social media, but also triggered a number of protests a few days ago. Regardless of the various opinions that have emerged, the protests –- triggered by, among other concerns, the extension of the presidential term of office and the postponement of the 2024 elections –- have only added to the tumult of our political sphere. The issue still arises despite the fact that the election organizers, the government and the House of Representatives have all agreed that the 2024 presidential elections will be held on Feb. 14, 2024.
Apart from the 2024 presidential elections, other political issues need to be urgently resolved, such as the regional heads elections slated for Nov. 27, 2024. This means that starting from May 15, the government must prepare five acting governors.
Another challenge is ensuring that these acting officials have the integrity and ability to keep the wheels of the administration running in their respective region.
Preparing 271 acting regional heads, whether governors, mayors or regents, to serve until 2023 is not the only challenge that arises as a result of not holding the regional elections in 2022 and 2023. Another challenge is ensuring that these acting officials have the integrity and ability to keep the wheels of the administration running in their respective region.
This challenge in the political sphere arises amid a number of circumstances, such as being in the midst of economic recovery after two years of the Covid-19 pandemic.
However, distribution and production lines that have yet to fully recover, coupled with the Russia-Ukraine war that has increasingly triggered price surges in food and energy, are issues that still need to be urgently addressed during this economic recovery.
The G20 presidency has given Indonesia the opportunity to play a bigger role in overcoming these global economic problems, the impacts of which have already reached the people in the country.
It takes a great amount of energy to address these problems and the circumstances above. In this regard, we should not waste energy on unproductive matters. In the political sphere, this includes eliminating all unnecessary speculation and debate, such as the extension of the presidential term of office and the postponement of the elections.
One solid step forward is to determine the stages, programs and schedule for the 2024 general elections as quickly and accurately as possible. The election organizers can only begin to carry out the 2024 election stages once the General Elections Commission (KPU) issues the regulations. The 2024 election stages will start in June 2022 and President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has requested all technical regulations related to the elections be completed immediately (Kompas, 11/4/2022).
With the majority power in the House and the resources it has, it should not be difficult for the current government to redirect the nation’s energy towards substantial and strategic matters.
