Muslims around the world, including in Indonesia, are welcoming the start of the holy month of Ramadan. This spiritual moment is expected to bring peace to the nation.
Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas said in Jakarta on Friday evening (1/4/2022) that this year’s Islamic fasting month began on Sunday (3/4). The decision was taken during the isbat (confirmation) meeting, which was attended by relevant officials, members of the Commission VIII of the House of Representatives (DPR), which oversees religion and social affairs, representatives of Islamic organizations and astronomy experts.
The decision was in line with that of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU). Previously, Muhammadiyah had declared that Ramadan began on Saturday (2/4). Thus there are different views regarding the start of the fasting month in the country. Some start fasting on Saturday, while others on Sunday.
This is not the first time the fasting month begins on different days. Muslims are used to accepting and respecting one another. Fasting and Idul Fitri should be observed and celebrated in a harmonious atmosphere. Tolerance should be appreciated. and it should also occur at the grassroots.
This year, the holy month of Ramadan is taking place at a time when the Indonesian people are still plagued with problems. Until now, the Covid-19 pandemic has not ended even though the number of cases has significantly decreased. The Russia-Ukraine war, which was followed by a global energy war, has triggered an increase in world crude oil prices. In Indonesia, the price of Pertamax gasoline has also gone up. Cooking oil prices are also still high. All parties are working hard to recover from the pandemic.
At the same time, the political world in the country also faces a number of challenges. One of them is about the proposal for the postponement of elections and the discourse of three terms for the president. Some political elites are competing for the interests of individuals, parties or groups.
If people observe fasting solemnly, they will be able to manage their heart, mind, speech and all behavior so that they will become more positive, productive and beneficial to others.
In such an atmosphere, fasting is expected to bring peace to the nation. Much literature says the essence of shaum (fasting) is to imsak (refrain). By not eating and drinking for a day, people are trained to control their emotions. If people observe fasting solemnly, they will be able to manage their heart, mind, speech and all behavior so that they will become more positive, productive and beneficial to others.
The spirit of this religious ritual should also be reflected in the life of the nation. During the fasting month, all elements of the nation are expected to view the various problems of the country more wisely and find the best solution together. The best is not only in accordance with personal or group interests, but for the good of this pluralistic Indonesian nation.
Political elites should act as role models in using the mandate of office to bring the greatest benefits to the people. However, it should be remembered that the power given by the people through elections has a time limit according to the constitution and democratic principles.
We hope that Muslims can fast the entire month of Ramadan, and so the life of the nation will be more peaceful.
