The members of the 2022-2027 general elections organizing bodies have finally been elected. While the selection process offered no surprises, tough tasks and challenges await them.
The individuals selected by the House of Representatives Commission II as the seven members of the General Elections Commission (KPU) and the five members of the Elections Supervisory Agency (Bawaslu) did not come as a surprise. Most of the finalists were the same names that had been circulating at the House. This indicates that the House’s fit and proper test did not only measure the candidates’ capacities, but also involved them in the political process.
Separately, the newly elected KPU and Bawaslu members need to be accepted and respected. This is because they have undergone a mutually agreed selection process that, thus far, has not shown any indication of procedural flaws. Supporting them is crucial because holding the simultaneous general elections on 14 Feb. 2024 and simultaneous regional elections on 27 Nov. 2024 is no easy feat. The Covid-19 pandemic will also add to the challenges in preparing and holding the elections, since we cannot predict when it will end.
We do not yet have the experience to hold all these elections simultaneously in all regions across the country.
The year 2019 taught us that simultaneously holding the presidential election and the legislative election for members of the House of Representatives, the Regional Representatives Council (DPD), and the provincial and regional/municipal Legislative Councils (DPRD I and DPRD II) is a very complex and tiring process. We do not yet have the experience to hold all these elections simultaneously in all regions across the country.
The initial election phase begins in June. However, a number of other preparations have already begun, such as drafting the KPU regulation on the phases, programs and schedule of the 2024 elections.
Before starting the various tasks related to implementing the 2024 general elections, the newly elected KPU and Bawaslu members first need to consolidate internally. Internal agreements need to be made to uphold integrity and to keep others in check so that legal cases do not reoccur, such as the acts of corruption committed by previous KPU members.
The selection of the 2017-2022 KPU members to complete the draft regulation for the 2024 general elections deserves appreciation. This step facilitated the internal transition of the KPU and helped prepare for the 2024 general elections.
This support can be shown by, for example, giving the best in the national interest during consultations on the KPU draft or in discussing the election budget.
The 2022-2027 KPU and Bawaslu members need the support of other parties, such as the government and the House, to organize the 2024 elections. This support can be shown by, for example, giving the best in the national interest during consultations on the KPU draft or in discussing the election budget.
Support from the House and the government will not only contribute to holding an honest, fair, effective, efficient, accountable and professional general elections in 2024. It will also be recorded as part of the legacy of the continuity of the democratic process in Indonesia.
