JAKARTA, KOMPAS — The Film Penyalin Cahaya (Copier of Light) dominated the stage of the Piala Citra Awards for the 2021 Indonesian Film Festival (FFI). The film produced by Rekata Film and Kaninga Pictures won 12 Piala Citra Awards from 17 nominations.
Out of the 12 Piala Citra Awards that were won, Penyalin Cahaya received awards for the main categories, namely Best Feature Film, Best Director (Wregas Bhanuteja), Best Male Lead Actor (Chicco Kurniawan) and Best Supporting Actor (Jerome Kurnia).
Meanwhile, the categories for Best Female Lead Actor and Best Supporting Actor were respectively won by Arawinda Kirana (Yuni) and Marissa Anita (Ali and Ratu Ratu Queens).
FFI 2021, which was held at the Jakarta Convention Center with strict health protocols on Wednesday (10/11/2021) evening, is quite special because on the same day the government announced Usmar Ismail, a prominent Indonesian film director, as a national hero.
"This morning, as a form of the highest appreciation for cultural fighters, on behalf of the nation and state, I confer the title of National Hero to Bapak Haji Usmar Ismail, the Father of Indonesian Film," said President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo in his speech at the Piala Citra FFI Award event in Jakarta.
The chairperson of the FFI 2021 Committee, Reza Rahadian, expressed his gratitude for the high appreciation for film people in the form of conferring the title of national hero to Usmar Ismail. “The current pandemic in this country, and in all parts of the world, has not yet ended. However, God willing, we will be able to go through the challenges caused by it one by one," he said.
Rich in messages
This year's FFI stage seems even more special because there are many important messages related to social phenomena brought by filmmakers. This is reflected in the film's stories and the expressions of filmmakers on the Piala Citra stage.
The Best Film, Penyalin Cahaya, for example, is about victims of violence. Yuni talks about women's struggles to achieve their dreams. Meanwhile, Ali dan Ratu Ratu Queens talk about a young man who is trying to find his mother with the help of a number of women.
The Best Director Wregas Bhanuteja hoped that the message in Penyalin Cahaya could reach the wider community. "In the era of the pandemic, we hear that the rate of sexual violence cases is increasing. We hope that from this film we can learn together to be more sensitive and empathetic to the condition around us,” said Wregas.
Meanwhile, Marissa Anita raised the issue of gender equality when giving a speech as the Best Supporting Female Actor. “I hope there will be more female filmmakers because there are many women's stories that apparently are best told by women. This is because the perspectives of women and men are different,” he said.
Other filmmakers have voiced the issue of the poison of masculinity, the issue of diversity, sympathy for victims of violence and voiced the importance of healthy working hours.
Hikmat Darmawan, a film observer, saw that FFI 2021 showed diversity. In terms of themes, most of the films that were nominated continue to carry family themes and stories, but are not merely heteronormative. Furthermore, the use of elements of local cultures and languages has also been mainstreamed.
“In the past when Mas Garin made the film Surat untuk Bidadari (Letter to the Angel - 1994), it gave the impression of being very subversive. However, after that, more and more films have done the same thing, namely using regional languages. Now it's even commonplace," said Hikmat.
I truly appreciate and hope that filmmakers, actors, actresses and all film stakeholders cultivate big dreams, strengthen collaboration with world film centers to explore and promote unique stories.
A member of the FFI 2021 jury, Niniek L. Kariem, explained that the film did indeed reflect the condition of society. Therefore, the perspective of film assessment must also be flexible to keep up with the times. "I refer to the words of Gus Dur, 'Any performing arts that do not reflect the condition of society are not performances. It's called a play," said Niniek.
President Jokowi praised and appreciated the wealth of story themes produced by filmmakers, for example, the story about women who gave birth to children in prison in the documentary film Invisible Hopes (2021).
"I truly appreciate and hope that filmmakers, actors, actresses and all film stakeholders cultivate big dreams, strengthen collaboration with world film centers to explore and promote unique stories," said the President. (SKA/IAN/LSA/DWA/CAS/BSW)
