A ship belonging to the Law and Human Rights Ministry transporting sand trucks for the construction of a penitentiary in Nusakambangan capsized in Segara Anakan. Two people were killed in the accident.
CILACAP, KOMPAS — The search and rescue team is still looking for the possibility of other victims in the boat incident in the Segara Anakan Lagoon, Cilacap, Central Java, Friday (17/9/2021) at 9:00 a.m. As of yesterday, two people have been found dead, with five others rescued.
The overturned Pengayoman IV ship belongs to the Law and Human Rights Ministry with thef position of the incident site about 1.8 kilometers from the Wijayapura Pier. The ship, which was transporting two tronton trucks loaded with sand for the construction of a prison, was believed to have capsized in strong winds and strong currents.
"We will search again to see whether there are still other victims trapped in the ship," said head of the Cilacap chapter of the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), I Nyoman Sidakarya, yesterday. The depth at the incident site was 9-10 meters.
According to I Nyoman, the ship departed from the pier at 8:45 a.m. Fifteen minutes after the incident, a relief team from the Navy, the Cilacap office of the Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Central Java’s water and air police unit (Polairud) and Basarnas arrived at the location.
From the data collection, the two victims who died were identified as Wahyu, a prison officer and Kardim, a truck driver.
Based on the surveillance camera (CCTV) footage, there were seven people on board. From the data collection, the two victims who died were identified as Wahyu, a prison officer and Kardim, a truck driver.
The five survivors were three crew members, Dicky, Melga and skipper Antoro Subagyo. The other two were Suheris, a truck driver, and Yulianto, a passenger. The two bodies were immediately taken to the hospital.
According to a witness, Sunandar, 40, the ship departed from Wijayapura Pier on the way to Sodong Pier, Nusakambangan. "I saw it was a bit tilted. Later I saw it was in an upside-down position over," he said.
Worth the operation
Cilacap Police Chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Leganek Mawardi said the main cause of the accident was still under investigation.
However, the ship was believed to be worth the operation as it had a total payload capacity of up to 134 tons. This was not the first time the ship had transported trucks and sand for the construction of the prison, but had been doing so for two months.
Leganek also said the ship\'s passenger manifesto was not available because the Wijayapura Pier is a special crossing route, not a public one, meaning only certain people are allowed to cross. Police will continue to investigate this incident.
The skipper of the ship has been working since 2009.
Meanwhile, the head of the Pasir Putih Nusakambangan Prison, Fajar Nurcahyono, said that the Pengayoman IV ship started operation in 2012. The skipper of the ship has been working since 2009.
"It\'s not a new item (ship) for us. It is an old item. In the future, we propose that the leadership pays attention to transportation facilities, especially ships and other transportation facilities for prison officers stationed in Nusakambangan. In Nusakambangan there is not only one prison, but nine units," said Fajar.
The crossing ship underwent its last maintenance three to four months ago and was coordinated by the Batu Prison Task Force. Cilacap\'s Tanjung Intan Port traffic was temporarily suspended yesterday. A number of signs were installed at the site of the sinking.
The ship was broken
Meanwhile, high waves also affected the waters around Moyo Island, Sumbawa regency, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB). Last Thursday, a fishing boat named Katamarasa broke down and sank. All crew members were safe and have been evacuated.
The head of the Mataram Search and Rescue Office, Nanang Sigit, said the accident occurred Thursday (16/9) at 4 p.m., Central Indonesia Time, in the waters of Stema village, Moyo Island. It was initially reported that there were three passengers on the ship, but this was later increased to seven.
The ship departed from Limung village, Sumbawa Besar, to the waters of Moyo Island, last Wednesday. It was hit by waves due to strong winds on the way home.
According to the weather forecast, until Saturday (18/9) waves of up to 2 meters or higher will occur in the Lombok Strait, Alas Strait, Indian Ocean south of NTB and Sape Strait.
