President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo still has 3.5 years left in his second term of office, which will end on Oct. 20, 2024.
That among of time is sufficient for the administration of President Jokowi and Vice President Ma\'ruf Amin to resolve various past human rights cases. The past human rights violations are a humanitarian debt and resolving them would also fulfill President Jokowi\'s campaign promises.
The Nawacita I document clearly said in detail the President\'s promise to resolve past human rights violations in a fair manner. This is what distinguishes President Jokowi from previous presidents.
One by one, cases of the past human rights violations were written in Nawacita. This at least indicated that the team behind President Jokowi who prepared the campaign documents was very serious about resolving the historical humanitarian debt. The past cases of human rights violations are a black shroud over the nation.
However, contemporary political history teaches that human rights violations are an issue that had been widely being discussed in the campaign. The issue of human rights violations was only used to weaken political opponents. The issue of human rights violations becomes an annual agenda for the month of reform, May. Archives of the past are reopened, given new interpretations, and billed to the government.
As reported by this daily, Monday (17/5/2021), Coordinating Political, Legal and Security Affairs Minister Mahfud MD disclosed that he had summoned the Attorney General and the National Human Rights Commission to resolve 13 cases of the past human rights violations. In addition to judicial efforts through the court mechanism, the government is trying to resolve it through the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (KKR) mechanism.
The issue of resolving human rights violations has never made any progress. Going nowhere. Now, President Jokowi\'s second term is the best momentum to pay off the campaign debt. A number of human rights activists, humanitarian activists and humanitarian fighters are present around President Jokowi and the Presidential Staff Office. They can provide advice on how the past human rights violations should be resolved.
President Jokowi\'s political position is also very strong. With the support of political parties in the House of Representatives (DPR), all of President Jokowi\'s ideas and plans can be realized. The revision of the Corruption Eradication Commission Law that was rejected by the public could also be realized because of the strong support from parties backing the government. This means that if difficult issues can be realized, of course the issue of the past human rights violations can also be resolved. Whether through a court mechanism or through the KKR mechanism, this is a state political decision.
However, if there is no genuine intent to solve the issues for any reason, the easiest political step is not to place the actors associated with human rights violations in the power structure. Because, it sorely hurts.
