Exploring Sumba Island in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) seems to be a never-ending journey. The four regencies in the Tanah Marapu (Land of Marapu) have a natural landscape that is breathtaking, from layered hills and savannah grasslands to waterfalls and beautiful beaches.
Warinding Hill located in Pambota Jara village, Pandawai district, East Sumba, NTT, is one of them. At the end of April 2019, we had the opportunity to capture its beauty. From the afternoon until sunset is the best time to enjoy the regency’s vast stretch of meadows and hills. The grass-covered hillside offers changing colors in accordance with the season.
The main attraction of Warinding Hill is the layered hills that are enormous and look as if they are stacked together.
That day, we arrived at Warinding Hill at almost sunset. The hill top was full of tourists who wanted to take photos and to enjoy the scenery. Among them were two couples who wanted to take prewedding photos. One of the couples came from as far as Surabaya, East Java to get photographed with Warinding Hill in the background.
Umbu Ludang said Warinding Hill became popular after it was used as the set for the movie Pendekar Tongkat Emas (The Golden Cane Warrior). Before being used as the set of that movie, which stars Nicholas Saputra and Christine Hakim, nothing was special about the hill.
“Previously, for many local people, nothing was special about the hill because they are used to seeing the landscape,” he said.
According to Keba Hanggar, 44, a local resident who offers horses for hire in Warinding Hill, the hill was known as Lai Uhuk, which means “a place to rest”. He added the hill was often used as a place to rest among people taking long journeys. (Kompas, Sept. 22, 2019).
