After being hit by drought last year, the farmers on West Java’s northern coast are now worried about floods and pest infestations. Apart from the uncertain weather, the flip-flopping regulations also make them more vulnerable to poverty.
Several rice fields in Suranenggala Kidul village of Suranenggala district, Cirebon regency looked like muddy ponds on Monday (10/2/2020). Green paddies were almost nowhere to be found. Two-week-old paddies had withered and died from overwatering. Their roots had blackened from rot. A handful of farmers were building a dike to divert runoff.
