JAKARTA, KOMPAS— Indonesia dominated the Daihatsu Indonesia Masters 2020 badminton tournament by winning three titles, namely the men\'s singles, men\'s doubles and women\'s doubles. Greysia Polii/Apriyani Rahayu and Anthony Sinisuka Ginting won the titles after a difficult 2019.
With their titles, they are expected to be more motivated to face many important tournaments in 2020, with the Tokyo Olympics as the ultimate target. Apriyani even cried when hugging Greysia on the court, shortly after becoming the champion in the tournament at Istora Gelora Bung Karno, Jakarta.
The 21-year badminton player could not hide her emotion even during the press conference. "Alhamdulillah, thank God, I did not expect this. I remembered, last year, when we failed a lot. We were looking for ways to get out of trouble and to become the champion, get ahead. Alhamdulillah, on our own home turf, we were able to give our best performance, "said Apriyani.
The title for world the number eight women\'s doubles was obtained in the final match on Sunday (1/19/2020) when they defeated Maiken Fruergaard / Sara Thygesen (Denmark).
Greysia / Apriyani won with the scores of 18-21, 21-11, 23-21. The difference in scores during the crucial moment never passed more than three points. The tense moment occurred when Greysia / Apriyani fell behind at 18-19 after advancing at 18-15 in their favor.
The gold medal they obtained became their first after winning the Indian Open in March 2019. Anthony had to wait even longer, one year and four months, to stand on the championship podium, after defeating Anders Antonsen (Denmark) with scores of 17-21 , 21-15, 21-9 on Sunday.
The final title of the world\'s number seven ranked men\'s singles was the China Open in September 2018. Another title for the host was obtained by fellow Indonesian men\'s doubles. Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo / Marcus Fernaldi Gideon
won for the third time in a row after defeating Hendra Setiawan / Mohammad Ahsan with scores of 21-15, 21-16.
In 2019, Greysia / Apriyani and Anthony went through a difficult journey. In 2018, at a time when Japanese women\'s doubles reached their peak and were the most difficult to defeat, Greysia / Apriyani has to face a new competitor from South Korea, namely Kim So-yeong / Kong Hee-yong, who are now ranked fourth in the world. Greysia / Apriyani achieved the highest results in 2019 by breaking through the World Championship semifinals.
However, they were eliminated in the first and second rounds in the last four tournaments. The pressure grew because Greysia / Apriyani were often Indonesia’s only representatives in women\'s doubles at high-level tournaments. The rankings of other Indonesian women\'s doubles are still too low for them to take part in BWF Super 750 and 1000 tournaments. It is different from Japan, China and South Korea, which can place two to four representatives so they can "help" one another to defeat opponents from other countries.
"A lot of things we have to pass to win here. Facing other countries that have many representatives, we must motivate ourselves to reach higher, especially in the way of thinking, "said Greysia. One of the most senior players in the national badminton training center also praised Apriyani, who was resistant to pressure, both in matches and training.
"Supposing, we cry when becoming the champion and during training," said Greysia. They managed to restore their confidence and performance by changing the pattern of play. Greysia was asked to adapt to Apriyani’s fast game character.
After reaching the Malaysia Masters semifinals on Jan. 7-12 , this time they won the title. "After this, we will prepare for Thailand. We may be happy, but we cannot be complacent because our goal is for the Tokyo Olympics," Greysia said.
Anthony\'s motivation
Five failures in the five finals in 2019 became Anthony\'s motivation for the championship at the Istora. The five defeats were at Singapore, Australia, China and the Hong Kong Open, as well as the BWF World Tour Final tournament. "I learned from the five finals in which I always lost. I would not let it happen again. Last year,.. failed and failed, now try again, try again until it
works. I want to prove that men\'s singles can win, "said Anthony, who also made the title as an encouragement at the Olympics.
However, a busy schedule has already awaited Indonesian badminton players, including Anthony and Jonatan Christie.
Men\'s singles coach Hendry Saputra Ho said, with the tight schedule of tournaments that must be followed, he would focus Anthony and Jonatan\'s performances on the BWF Super 750 and 1000 tournaments, with the All England to take place on March 11-15 as the closest target. On Sunday, the mixed doubles title was won by Zheng Siwei / Huang Yaqiong (China), while Ratchanok Intanon won the women\'s singles title. (DNA/IYA)
