The coattail effect is one of the most important aspects on the minds of all political actors ahead of the 2019 general elections. The core question is whether or not presidential candidates have any electoral impact on their supporting political parties. As presidential candidates will certainly be supported by a coalition of parties, the question is this: What electoral impact do presidential candidates have on parties in the coalition other than the one of which the candidate is a member?

Scientific discourse on the coattail effect is generally based on research on simultaneous elections in a two-party presidential system. A major example is the US election. The general consensus is that there is a positive relationship between the electoral strength of a presidential candidate and his or her supporting party. This means that a popular presidential candidate or president with high electability will give electoral benefits to the party that supports him or her.
