BANTUL, KOMPAS — The decline in electability and emerging public negativity for the Golkar Party have become determining factors for the party to hold a national extraordinary meeting (Munaslub). A new general chairman will be chosen at the Munaslub to replace Setya Novanto, who has been named as a suspect in the e-ID corruption case. As of Sunday (3/12), 31 out of 34 provinces had already shown their support for a Munaslub.
Golkar West Java Regional Representatives (DPDs) chairman Dedi Mulyadi said that during a meeting of Golkar’s provincial DPD heads, it appeared that the Munaslub would be held on Dec. 16 and 17. According to plans, they will submit the proposal to Golkar\'s Central Executive Board on Wednesday (6/12).
"This is what we expect, because we want to carry out changes immediately so that Golkar can consolidate the organization ahead of the regional elections in 2018 and the legislative and presidential elections in 2019," Dedi said on Sunday in Bantul, Yogyakarta.
Dedi also pointed out that the public was now waiting to see whether the Golkar elite was committed to change or not. " The public support for Golkar to make changes is remarkable right now. So, don’t miss the moment to make change as the public expects," he said. He explained that the Munaslub has no direct connection to the Novanto\'s pretrial hearing, so there was no need to wait for its results.
Difficult to resist
The intension of Golkar\'s provincial DPDs to propose the Munaslub is apparently difficult to resist. Golkar deputy secretary-general Ace Hasan Syadzily said in Jakarta that in line with the party\'s statute, a Munaslub could be held upon a proposal from two-thirds of its provincial DPDs.
"If the DPDs have officially submitting the proposal to Golkar acting general chairman Idrus Marham and urge a plenary session, a plenary session can be carried out as soon as possible," Ace said.
In connection with the planned Munaslub, the competition for general chairman has grown tight after Idrus Marham expressed his intension to become the general chairman. He will compete against Airlangga Hartarto, a Golkar member and also the Industry Minister of the working Cabinet. On Monday (4/12), Airlangga, plans to raise support for his general chairman bid among the Central Organization for Indonesian Employees (SOKSI), which founded Golkar.
Golkar central board chairman Aziz Syamsuddin said the board was presently considering more conducive options for replacing Novanto. One of the options being considered is waiting for Novanto to resign from his position, and then the party would prepare to hold a Munaslub.
"The DPP at present is considering the best among the available options. How we can make a soft landing, so as not to solve a problem by creating another problem," said Aziz.
